Unit 12 Project Proposal

Candidate name: Lily Moore

Candidate number: 254377

Pathway: Sound design / Foley and Sound engineering

Project Title: Sound recording and design in Film, Studio and Live settings

Section 1: Context:

(approx. 300 words)

In my project I am focusing on Foley, Sound design and Sound engineering in live and studio settings.

My final project will consist of individual work and work with other class mates. I am planning to do some sound engineering and record one of Chris’ songs. He would like to record each section separately so I will spend multiple sessions with him recording and then edit the final recordings appropriately, by mixing, mastering, layering and adding effects. I will work closely with Chris to ensure the song sounds how he wants it to.

In addition to this I will collaborate with Ollie on some film material. Ollie will compose and mix the backing music for the scene and I will create the Foley and sound design as well as editing and mixing the final tracks. I will do this by choosing appropriate scenes to work on that fit both of our style’s as well as something that is going to be achievable in the time scale we have to complete our projects.

So that I have a combination of live and studio engineering, I will help out with the live sound for our final performance at the Arc Theatre. This will include setting up all the necessary equipment, sound checking and being responsible for the sound throughout the performance.

I have chosen this pathway because I enjoy sound and audio and love the process of creating and working out the right sounds for a specific visual and then putting them together to transform the viewing experience of a film better. I also love being involved in the making of music as well as live shows however, I don’t enjoy performing. So engineering and recording allows me to be closely involved with the instruments and music without having to be onstage.

Section 2: Research:

(approx. 50 words)

I will research suitable scenes for Foley, professional sound techniques, different recording set ups, mixing and mastering, set ups for live events.

I will use Primary and secondary sources such as asking my lecturers, work experience mentor and peers for feedback using surveys, YouTube, Interviews with professionals, Imdb and Filmsound.org.

Section 3: Problem Solving:

 (approx. 100 words)

Some problems I may encounter include relying on other people I work with to commit and be dependable, lack of time to complete the project to a good standard, not having college equipment to continue my practical work at home and technical difficulties with the equipment.

I can fix this by coming in to college out of my timetabled hours to use equipment, plan and communicate well so the people I work with have a clear idea of expectations.

Using my time effectively and removing distractions will ensure my projects will be completed on time to a high standard.

Section 4: Planning and Production:

(approx. 50 words)

I will keep up to date production logs, make a list of the Foley and ADR that need recreating, plan props and resources, prioritize significant sounds and understand expectations for Chris’s song. I will need various equipment such as microphones, amps, logic, digital desk and so on.

Section 5: Practical skills:

(approx. 100 words)

The practical skills I need include mixing and mastering, editing in Logic, be capable of recording techniques for Foley, ADR and Live instruments, use equipment and resources effectively and efficiently, composition skills - working with other performers on the course who have a better understanding of their instruments and their compositions will help. Organization skills - Foley projects often take a lot of time and attention.

I will improve by doing lots of research through videos on YouTube, articles and blogs online, books and talking to professionals in the business as well as my lecturers and college tutors.

Section 6: Evaluation and reflection:

(approx. 100 words)

Throughout my project I will continuously evaluate and reflect on my process by keeping production logs up to date and review them to see what I need to complete, change and improve.

I will have regular communication with both my peers and tutors, and use their feedback to make improvements and evaluate my work. This will give me different perspectives and the best chance to complete my final project to a high standard.

Section 7: Presentation:

(approx. 100 words)

There are many ways I could present my work such as creating a website that will show my videos, audio samples and written biographies, using Tik Tok which is a social media platform that I can use to post my ‘Foley Tutorial Videos’ on. These are short tutorials explaining how I create certain sounds for specific scenes, YouTube is a good place to showcase longer videos and music, so I could show small snippets on Tik Tok and then promote longer videos on YouTube and social media sites like Instagram are a good place to promote your ‘brand’ and work.
